Caught

Celeste Fritsche 1977 (Oklahoma)

I am glad I got to see you the other day
Or rather glad you saw me, that is.
To catch you in your lies that way
Gave a surge of vindicated bliss.

Even better that you tried to talk
And found my heart’s door shut tight.
You drew your own outline in chalk
And single-handedly lost this fight.

Keep your forked tongue behind your teeth.
Don’t speak from either side of your face.
Under your slimy rock, crawl back beneath
And wallow long in your own disgrace.

You played your games with my heart,
Gave me lessons no one should learn.
Lying for sport from the very start!
I feel relieved watching this bridge burn.

About this poem

I wrote this poem after my ex informed me he had left the country only for me to run right into him at my favorite restaurant. It's about the clarity of thought and feeling that comes when the truth cannot be refuted, ignored, or manipulated - when the mask falls off and shatters. Sometimes, it just takes a little time to find the courage to strike the match and move on.

Celeste Fritsche

While I often dabbled in writing poetry growing up, I have recently found a new passion for doing so. When not at my desk job, or walking one of my dogs, I am typically writing poems, painting, wood burning, hand etching glass, or occasionally working with resin. I love to create, and I hope that my creations put a little bit of beauty back into this often dark and broken world. more…
