Heart of Gold

This heart is made of gold
I would never hide its shine
Its beauty and luster drew you close
In your greed and lust you overreached
Recklessly mishandling it
Discarding it broken, shattered

But what you did not realize
About such a heart as mine
You cannot touch one
Without exposing your soul

And your grimy prints
will all wash away
The wounds you inflicted
will heal over one day
And I will remain still
With this heart of gold

Glorious and soft
Pure and enduring

The rarest of all treasures
Beyond your dreams
Outside your reach
Forever lost to you

About this poem

I wrote this poem after being inspired by a painting I made this summer following a particularly painful breakup. Gold, as a precious metal, will always have intrinsic value, and greedy people will always lust after it. And they will leave it perhaps a bit tarnished or broken, but it will still be beautiful and still has value.

Celeste Fritsche

While I often dabbled in writing poetry growing up, I have recently found a new passion for doing so. When not at my desk job, or walking one of my dogs, I am typically writing poems, painting, wood burning, hand etching glass, or occasionally working with resin. I love to create, and I hope that my creations put a little bit of beauty back into this often dark and broken world. more…
