Our Words
Craig Childers 1964 (Santa Cruz)
Words are splattered everywhere that you go
Some of them, from hype, exponentially grow
Adjectives, prepositions, verbs, and nouns
Rhetoric, propaganda and all of their sounds
Repeatedly embedded into all of our minds
Especially from advertisers and all their kinds.
Lawyers craft them in a scheming sly
So they can exonerate and mollify
While tabloids catapult them through the sky
For exaggeration and to glorify
The shock jock rigs them to explode
With an anxious delight to see them corrode
Politicians use them with tactical spite
Launching them in debates with all of their might
Using the media to line their sight
And land their targets from morning to night
The salesman wraps them in delicate lies
Mending wings to deception and hoping it flies
Diplomats employ them for convincing persuasion
And engage them defensively to avoid an invasion
They are used in the streets as signals and slangs
And become the lifeblood of factions and gangs
But words lose their meaning more frequently
As it seems they’ve lost their integrity
And we push them ever so recklessly
To the point they have no dignity
So be mindful of depth in your hindsight
And respect your words before they take flight
