After the Pity Party
Gisela Vigil 1959 (Cuba)
After the Pity Party
Done the praying and wishing,
the fearing, the stressing.
Then in valley of darkness
on knees, some confessing.
Seems my walls, they are shaking.
My foundation has crumbled.
Gather buckets of teardrops.
Take a step, then I stumble.
Brush the dust off, I must.
Close the book on my rant.
Dig for strength that’s been buried.
Say “I can” not “I can’t”
I then, gather the harvest
of survival skills grown.
Since no one walks beside me,
I must stand on my own.
Brick by brick, fix foundation
and my worries, set free.
Seems my fate has been written.
Must rely just on me.
About this poem
As a single woman, head of household, I’ve had to face many struggles alone. At times I’ve been so overwhelmed and have given myself a pity party. Then I realize that I just have to get up and keep going. Through the years I’ve learned some survival skills, so no more pity parties needed, maybe just a little rest.
