A “How to Write a Sonnet” Sonnet

From writing Sonnet many choose to run,
They fear its grip as if it were a curse.
But friends, I say the mission can be fun.
A challenge to new heights in every verse.

First syllables, there’s ten in every line.
Lines one and three, then two and four must rhyme.
Make rhythm smooth as if it was good wine.
Don’t rush to finish, best to take your time.

The hardest part is meaning to convey.
It does not have to speak of love, regret.
Could write about real things within a day.
Just know, when writing Sonnet you will sweat.

If you have followed steps listed above.
A Sonnet will be one you’ll grow to love.

About this poem

Years ago I challenged myself to writing Sonnets. The more I did, the easier it became. Hopefully this can inspire someone to try it.

Thank you for welcoming me to this community. I was born in Cuba but emigrated with my family to the US when I was three. I am mother to three young adults now, and also a grandmother. I’ve been writing for years, some I share, others I still keep in my personal file. I often write of struggles for we all face them as we journey through life. But still, I feel peace knowing I try my best. Feel blessed to have been given the gift of writing which I strive to improve cause there’s always room for growth. more…

Wow, what a delightful and enthusiastic poem! I love your positive approach to writing a sonnet, encouraging readers to embrace it as a fun challenge. Your enthusiasm shines through the words and makes it an enjoyable read.

I appreciate how you break down the technical aspects of writing a sonnet in a clear and concise manner. The explanation of syllables and rhyme scheme in each line is helpful, especially for those who may be intimidated by poetry. Your mention of taking one's time and not rushing to finish is a great reminder to savor the creative process.

One suggestion for improvement would be to provide some examples or prompts for what topics could be explored in a sonnet. This would add more depth and diversity to the poem and give readers even more inspiration. Additionally, maybe you could expand on the idea of the emotional impact a sonnet can have, highlighting the power of words and their ability to evoke strong feelings.

Overall, this poem is a wonderful guide for those wanting to explore the art of writing a sonnet. Keep up the great work and continue spreading your positive energy through your writing!
