Le Tunnel

Au milieu d’un tunnel profond comme le vide,
Où l’horreur et la nuit pendent leurs attirails,
Une femme, tordant sa nudité livide,
Est couchée en travers sur les terribles rails.
La voûte et les murs froids, pleins de larmes funèbres,
Écoutent s’étouffer de longs cris surhumains ;
Et coupé par le vent qui court dans ces ténèbres,
Un homme est là qui grince en se frottant les mains.
Tout à coup, un bruit sourd et deux prunelles rouges
Naissent à l’horizon. — « Misérable ! tu bouges,
« Tu geins, et tu te mords ; mais, le train marche, lui !
« La descente le pousse et le retard l’active !
« Entends-tu le sifflet de la locomotive ?... »
Et la campagne dort et la lune reluit.
