Shadows of the Day

Mathew L. Hunt 1973 (Los Alamitos, CA)

On our very long journey through life, one must know
The car's windshield is the ultimate foreshadow.
Even the ignorant knows this to be true,
But even they could not tell it to you.
They are too busy in a world of bliss
Skirting around what I would surely miss.

We fight and struggle to stay a part
Of the game of chance that is an art.
The winner doesn't always cross the finish line
Nor do those who cross the finish line always shine.
Each of us must choose wisely our lot in life.
Shouldn't it be worth all the pain and strife?

The fool may rule the land for a time.
Punishment awaits him for his crime.
May you someday prove worthy and wise.
I have tried to be the wisest fool
In this world that is so harsh and cruel.

The shadows lurk, but are not truly cast
Until a time comes, that we did not ask.
