Independence
Mathew L. Hunt 1973 (Los Alamitos, CA)
I headed down the difficult one
Where most would've found none.
Sometimes we achieve the least,
Walking down the path most free.
A party I belong to not,
For they don't have my thought.
Many a war has been wrought.
My support in either can't be bought.
What team do I favor you ask?
And point to them in dead last.
A winner is often the more popular,
But those who endure, with more character.
Milk comes from the store?
Who told you, I'll ignore.
The tractor, plow, and hoe are compliant,
Even Emerson and Thoreau wrote self reliance.
Of all I've learned, I know this to be true;
Listen not to the fools, but the king in you.
