Choice

Robert loughran 1962 (Ireland)

One question alone remains,

what are you willing to do about it.

Not what can you do, what might you do,

what should you do,

all those are easily answered.

But what are you willing to do about it.

Will you take it to a different place,

where failure is not an option.

No easy exit to embrace.

Are you willing to burn your boats,

like Cortes of old.

Or stand like the Spartans before the never ending horde.

Are you willing to say no further,

This is where it ends.

Nothing passes here, whatever hell may send.

If you can't meet this  question with a full committed yay,

then by all means, run off to fight on some other day,

or plan escapes, make excuses, find some other way,

but to run from fear and misfortune,

from  our clear duty if we stray.

Then we must live forever, a beast of burden,

carrying our weakness from that day.
