The Past

The Past
By William Upton

The past is the past people say
Just forget about it and it will go away
Never in my lifetime has that happened to me
I keep thinking of the mistakes I feel I’m not free

I tried meditation and doing other things
But the past has me hanging on slim strings
I feel I’m a puppet to my past
Controlled, manipulated, and vast

My past plays tricks with my head
It keeps telling me things even in bed
The past creeps up and brings back memories
It brings old problems and horrible remedies

All the sudden a voice inside
Saying That I’m not the same outside
It says I’m a great human being
Then I look deep and begin seeing

When I look deep
Oh how I weep
I say thank you lord
Then I read the word

So, I say to you with a happy cry
Listen to that voice don’t let it die
For the Lord is speaking
You must continue seeking

Give the past to Our God
Amen!
