Words
Shh, stop for a moment, be still for an instant.
In the air surrounding, with their blessings so scant,
Can you hear? The words, you’re speaking,
O how they bounce off the walls you’re creating?
You launch them in pain, and in anger, you thrust them
You throw them in despair; you hurl them in shame
You place them on your bow and for the heart, you take aim.
But you alone are the target for them.
Your words, seeds of steel,
That you water with bitter tears
Sprout their unforgiving harvest of bars.
They blockade your mind, erect their ramparts.
Soon, they entrap you in their babbling jail,
Your vision, they contain behind their thick veil.
Shh, stop for an instant, murmur no more
Hear the whisper that flows at your core
Mutter these words that you were given
The ones that will lead you back to Eden
Arm them on the boomerang of your praise
Load your catapult and set the world ablaze.
Blast them off in hope and in love,
Hurl them up ‘til they reach Him above.
Know that they will come back to you once more
Your words, clouds of rain will spill out their galore.
So speak freely, your tongue don’t restrain
Your markings are gone, erased is your stain.
About this poem
I wrote this poem at a time when I had started reading the Bible and came across a verse, warning me about the power of life and death of my very own tongue.
