HER

it hurt you to see
her unreachable sunshine
being so close to you.

all the pain, all the dwelling,
has never been worth
the little glimpses of heaven
she gave you from time to time.

i know you spent countless,
sleepless nights,
wondering, “could have i done
something about it?”

yes.

you could have loosened sooner
the tangled strings of your heart.

About this poem

being a closeted teenager, insecure about my sexuality, was not easy. especially when it came to feeling different when the girl i liked was around. i've spent five years of my life questioning myself and never being sure of what to do.
