It was only the wind

Charles Fields II 1955 (Fort Bragg, NC)

We’ve been circling one another for days

trying to find a weakness.
An opening in each other’s armor

So, they say…
so we could say who won

Not for embarrassment’s sake
or pride of ownership

or any other more selfish reason,
clearly there is too much at stake.

We each do not want to be made a fool of …
and require further proof of intent,

It’s high noon now
and the odds for and against us are even…

But we are so wound up and tense
the least spark of activity real or imagined

and we draw

We both could
shoot the hide off a water buffalo at forty paces,

make a saddle before it hit the ground,
dried, cured, and mounted,

That’s our reputation yours and mine…

Somewhere in the corner of our eyes
we see motion

Two shots rang out.

It was a double heart
shot clean and true.

We got each other
at the same time

Too bad for the both of us.
Our aim was true,

Double heart shots
through and through

but too bad for us…
we both lose

It was only …
the wind
