My Shadow Yet Lives

Your shadow dies twice.

First, when the sun sets at dusk.

Then, once you learn love.

About this poem

I remember reading Magic Tree House as a kid and there was one book where the kids traveled back to ancient Japan. On their adventure, they met Basho, the famous Japanese poet of the age. I remember reading the Haiku he gifts to the kids in the book, which profoundly unlocked something inside me- I still remember it word for word (and I recommend you Google it if you don't know what I'm talking about). I've seen a few Haikus submitted here, and I wanted to raise my own to see how it does.

Ah, thank you for the kind words guys! And for your vote Francelle! I was very happy that someone appreciated the Haiku I decided to submit, choosing what to submit this month was giving me too much anxiety so I just sent this one in. My favorite one I’ve worked on so far and not been able to replicate.

There were two other haikus in this August contest: “Spooky season” by Daniel Jenkins and “The Project Managers Lament” by Graeme Mulvaney.

I had no idea that this haiku was you! That said, here were the notes I wrote about it:

“A powerful haiku. The interesting thing about some haikus are the titles that precede them. In the case of this poem, had I read it without knowing the title, I would have thought it to be an exceedingly profound poem (which it still is) that alludes to natural death (the descending of the sun) and a sort of death or loss of self into a love for another person. Then I realized, by the title, that the poem is a tragedy in that the narrator’s shadow still persists—that is to say, the narrator is still alive on Earth and is unacquainted with love.”

I knew this poem was penned by a sages’ hand, and when I scrolled down and saw your name there I literally chuckled to myself. Excellent work as usual, Je …

As usual, your eye for detail keeps my faith in the figurative “reader” very much alive John. The other Haikus were a pleasant surprise to read during the contest. I was actually considering having Spooky Season on my list this month simply because I had to appreciate someone else submitting a Haiku.

It was a fun venture! Haikus are hard to write ones that are “good enough” to submit and stand on their own legs, I feel. Thank you for the kind words and for stopping by.

It speaks to me in ways I have never analyzed the power that love holds against someone's darkness.

thank you! I remember seeing the email alert and being very satisfied. I did not expect to win anything with a Haiku, but I thought I would count it as a win if I could get at least one vote. Didn’t know it was you, I didn’t think to check if not for John’s kind comment. Congrats again on your win this month.

Hi Jewoo, I was actually in a coffee shop that time, enjoying my latte and reading the entries for that month's competition.

I came across that poem - "My Shadow Yet Lives" and I was so impressed. For a poem that's so short it contains such an incredible meaning. It made me appreciate the power of love in a perspective I haven't seen it before. I saved a screenshot of it and went on to continue reading.

For some strange reason, no other poems can match the impact your Haiku had left on me and that's when I knew, I have to cast my vote on that one.

It was quite unexpected that you were the one behind that poem most especially when recently, we just had a quick conversation on the commemt section about you wanting to submit some of your long poems.

Anyway, I still have the screenshot of your Haiku on my phone and I might share it with some close people I know in times I feel like it's worthy to be shared. I'll make sure you'll get the credit you deserve, of course.

Let's all keep the good writing going. :)
