Crushed

Not once, I caught you stealing a glance at me
from a distance undressing me top to bottom
with your eyes secret lusting
salivating a married woman

And when I caught you in the act
you dropped your eyes like a sheepish little boy
swiftly looking away

But why do you look at me that way
and swept me off my feet
not knowing the point I was driving to
I mumbled and fumbled off the track

Cos' you looked at me that way
I felt so naked and vulnerable
adjusting my dress, covering my body with my bare hands
like an Ostrich hiding its head in the sand

Squeezing my legs together so tight
I felt dead in the water
shivering, shaking from the foundation of my being

And a quick exchange of glance
you looked straight into my eyes and smiled
then from underneath my world exploded
Boom!

About this poem

This is a classical 'Persona poem' written from the point of view of a fictional married lady, which the poet created and made her the narrator of the poem. Speaking of her crushing experience with the poet, a kind of juxtapositioning in this confessional piece.

Benson Chukwueke

Owerri, Nigeria since 1971. This is how I process and express my innermost cogitations; sitting back with pen and paper, painting words and polishing them until they become flowered verses. I guess for these actions, I could be called a poet or what do think? more…
