One Day, The Earth Stood Still

One day, the Earth stood still,
And the Sun stopped shining.

The farmer could not till
His unusable soil.
The field was very toxic.
He was driven from sadness
To utter madness.

Two powerful men pressed red buttons.
Quiet moaning missiles sought and found their targets.
Whistling sounds-
Brilliant neons-
Thunderous vibrations-
Mushroom clouds-
Hurricane winds-
Pervasive dust-
Murky planet-
Silence everywhere-
Death worldwide-
Dark, cold globe of barrenness-
Lifelessly dead ball of desertedness.

One day, the world came to a sudden halt,
And the stars ceased to exist for eternity.

About this poem

I wrote this poem for English class in ninth grade. It was the best poem for the boys. It became my prized poem because my adoptive mother helped me with it. I thought of the title because of the movie by the same name. I had revised the poem so many times since. I wrote it on March 1985, but I do not remember the date. I do not know what form it is. I had dedicated this poem to my adoptive mother who passed away on November 3, 2000.
