She calls me

She calls me by name and I do not answer
She whispers to me in sweet relief but, I know she will cause me pain.
She tells me that only she can release me but, I have gone away from her.
I have felt cold from her touch
Felt the longer that was with her
The bittersweet taste of her breath
all of which I know were killing me.
She wanted to control me
She wanted to possess me
She wanted to destroy me
She wanted to be the one and the only thing in my life
And cast all others out.
I fought and struggled, and screamed
And, finally, I won.
Not the war but, the battle.
I know her name and she is nicotine.
