Firefighter’s Request
Firefighter’s Request
Who calls to me in this hour so late?
A fallen brother touched by an unkind fate?
I will not falter when called to the fight
Destiny does not take notice of day nor night
The fire rages against the innocent
Every action against it is a moment well spent
Advancing a line through smoke and heat
Fighting in conditions that shall not defeat
A tumultuous path to the heart of the beast
I seek to end destruction from the fire’s feast
Water and steam to battle its fury
Never a moment to fret nor worry
This is my calling and I shall abide
I have an equally strong fire inside
This beast will not win for it has no soul
Ending its life is my only goal
Will you thank me if I perish in this fiery pit?
Will you praise my name for I did not quit?
I fought on for those trapped inside
Please honor my family now that I have died
The fight was enough and proved my worth
It was my time to depart this earth
I promised not to desert you when your need was great
I knew that one day this could be my fate
It is enough if you could say a prayer for me
Praise the warrior who has been set free
Please honor my memory by living your life
Take into your arms my children and wife
I look on you now from the heavens above
Through the clouds and the sky I send my love
About this poem
This is a poem about the mindset and spirit of a firefighter. The dangers of the profession are accepted and even embraced owing to a commitment of placing the needs of others first, particularly in times of peril.
