Regret

Kacey Roman 1974 (USA)

Regret goes deeper than the darkest ocean
Sinking you into it's murky embrace.
Regret stays closer than your own shadow
Following you around and staring into your face.

Just when you think that you might be safe
And you allow a small smile to show
The door slams shut on your innermost thoughts
And like a prisoner, there's nowhere to go.

It creeps in late during the dead of night
And like a thief, it steals your dreams.
In their place it leaves insomnia,
Filled with hopelessness, nightmares, and screams.

At the back of my mind, in the front of my thoughts
There is just no place to hide.
All you can do is live day to day
With your secret regrets deep inside.
