DEMOCRACY

Onyi Okadike 1972 (Abakiliki)

Government of the people, they say
This by the people, they claim
And for the people, they insist
Tis Democracy

But spectators we are
Onlookers in the battle for our future
Uninvolved participants
Limited to voting charade

Their choices, we get
Shorn of opinions, are we
Lot cast among thieves
Their winners, our options

Self made choice is ultimate, declared the he-goat
An example, his beard
A self choice, so befitting
Complimenting his handsomeness

But the scrotal sack?
Courtesy of a friend’s benevolence
Lo and behold
An oversize, his lot

About this poem

It is a widely accepted norm that Democracy is the best form of government. Well, in Nigeria to be specific, our experiences seem to say otherwise.
