Hooked On Sonnets

Here I sit and try as I might
The elusive verse puts up a fight
I write down a phrase and then reword
I read it over and it seems quite absurd
Why can't I just sit and enjoy quiet time
Without the back of my head trying to rhyme
I don't know what draws me to write
Could it just be a fancy of flight
Am I under some kind of poetic spell
Perhaps I have some story to tell
It's not what you would call an addiction
More like a slightly humorous affliction
Is this a normal state of mind to be in
Is the ice that I walk really that thin
Could this be a need to tell the tale
Perhaps the feeding of an ego frail
Maybe some lesson to be taught
To all the above I think not
