Analysis of Guardian From Hell
Cheyenne Seaman 2003 (Philadelphia)
" 'Twas dark and stormy mi amigo
When yonder lass wanted a home.
You turned her away from your door,
Sent her shivering body back into the storm.
Fear, I should say, prevailed within her
As she had no comfort offered.
You good as well may have killed her
When you declined her a spot at your hearth.
Raise your glasses to a toast,
Such a shameful thing to boast,
You killed the yonder lass so weak,
Just so you could have some mead!"
Champagne and mead and something more
Was much needed for the poor lad vexed sore.
"If only I'd known, Lord have pity on me!
Trade me in her place, I'd take it gladly!"
If corpses could talk, she'd be the first,
For in his mind he knew he heard
The soft voice of an angel sweet
That he'd sent away from him only yester-eve.
"Poor lad, I am not dead, merely asleep,
Bitter tears for me you shouldn't weep.
I was a mere stranger at your humble door
When you yourself was oh so poor.
Look at midnight into heaven's sky
For then you'll discern truths from lie.
My heart forever will be with you
As I watch over everything you do."
When at midnight he opened his weary eyes
Then fell away the world's disguise.
Gently, he tiptoed to the door so bright
And before him beamed heaven's golden light.
Feather-like wings surrounded him instantly
Bearing him up Heaven's staircase with glee.
"Surely, this must be a dream of joy!
Please, with my mind do not toy!"
Before him now stood that poor sleeping girl
And deep in his heart, emotion began to stir.
"Nay, dear lad, 'tis now your reality.
Welcome home, with the Lord and I to be.
Forevermore the streets of gold you'll walk,
Face to face, with all, you may talk.
Clearest of streams, purest of brooks,
Into eternity you've now been took.
I told you once I'd forever watch your every move
And now I know my heart belongs to you.
'Tis what led me straight to your humble door
Though you yourself was very poor."
Opening his eyes, he was once more amazed.
He sat up in bed feeling quite dazed.
Looking around, the lass he spotted.
All dressed in black stood a flaming red-head.
"Thought 'twas Heaven I was in.
Surely, you're dead, I saw it this mornin'!"
"Nay, dear lad. You can see dead I am not.
I've come to take you where you thought not."
Her feathers unfurled from the sides of her gown,
Dark and gray like ashes, softer than down.
Her face was radiant, so full of love
He couldn't help but feel she was an angel from above.
"Take me away, oh dear angel of mine,
For soon my lass, my heart will be thine.
For many a moon I've awaited this night
So take me where your flaming locks shine bright!"
Away they flew towards the moon brightly shining
And then they swept towards the earth's orange glowing.
Into the pits of the underworld did she take him
Into the streets of gold did they forever live.
A guardian angel straight from Hell,
A poor young lad now living swell,
When the heart calls you to your fate,
'Tis your choice whether or not fate to embrace.
