The Essence of Love

The box of chocolates on the counter,
A vase of white orchids next to the window.
In your hand you carry a book,
Full of affection, sentiment and hope.
A luxurious spread of foods galore,
Like a banquet for the gentry.
From across the room you see the one you love,
With a radiant smile looking your way.

From within yourself there’s a perception of pride,
Like the turning of a new leaf in life.
Each stride you take is the spirit of confidence,
Finally feeling liberated from your usual timid self.
As you take a seat you gaze at your love,
The windows reflection proclaims them as you.

About this poem

This is a poem about self love, but is disguised as a Petrarchan sonnet about a lover. It is not until the last line that the truth is revealed. This is to show how self love is just as important if not more than love for another. After all, if you can’t love yourself first how do you love another? This is the first poem I ever wrote at 14 years old

Emily Kinsella

I am a 17 year old school student who has recently begun to write poetry. The poem I have entered is the only one I wrote before I turned 17. I have a love for classical literature which can be often referenced in some of my poems. I draw most of my inspiration through the experiences I have already endured, especially in the past year. I find writing poetry is a way of expressing my emotions while also healing from the darker times. I hope you enjoy is heartwarming poem!! more…
