A New Season

Today starts differently
Morning breaks chill fog
No rain, No thunder
Just a dried cold December morning

It is a new season
I can feel its power
With the smell of rain still on my nose
My lungs breathe meek dust
Which signals harmattan coming

Trees shall begin to strip off their leaves
As the leaves turn hue brown
Choir shall begin to go by moonlight
Singing carol like cherubim
As they welcome Christmas

We shall begin to rob kernel oil
And cover blanket in the cold night
As we Overhear the voice of trade wind
Whooping for joy
As it ushers in a new year

We shall begin to make new resolutions
And dust ourselves up from past ruins
Set new goals and targets
It's a new beginning, a renewed hope
That this year will bring for us good tidings

About this poem

How the beginning of harmattan season in nigeria signals Christmas holiday and coming new year. A time that comes with renewed hope, renewed energy to reset and start again.

Benson Chukwueke

Owerri, Nigeria since 1971. This is how I process and express my innermost cogitations; sitting back with pen and paper, painting words and polishing them until they become flowered verses. I guess for these actions, I could be called a poet or what do think? more…
