Broken system

ASIPHE NICHOLAS FENI 1999 (South Africa, Eastern Cape)

Broken system

The nation is bleeding,
Cut from the sharp glasses of a broken system.
A system that needs to be humbled into intense revision
For it is cultivating and fertilizing a ground
Of division.
Freedom seems to be the road only for the rich
The poor deems freedom a myth;
Still a goal they wish to someday reach.
The brain has become the last thing they desire to enrich
They are too hungry to listen to those who can teach.

The nation is divided;
But not beyond the broken promises.
The fantasies of those we have entrusted for solutions;
They have made promises that fan the flames
Of the fire of our struggles.
Leaving people to suffocate from the smoke.
The leaders have forgotten their people;
They abandoned those who lifted them as they rose to power,
Community disappeared at the top of their tower
Their tongues became shops that sell lies.

The nation is in pain
Masses of people are thankful to the rain
It conceals the evidence of their cries.
The children of the rainbow have
Become mute,
Our voices are trapped inside our throats.
There are stories of despair that are
Never shared
We have been misled by the
Promises of our flag
The gallery of true colors that no-one sees
Together as we travel through this maze of deception
We must reveal the hidden realities

The nation needs new voices
When everything is a lie
When there is no guideline
When the elders die without showing the light
Who must lift us up from the darkness?
Who has the time to invest in young minds?
We need to put together the pieces of a broken glass
We need to cultivate and fertilize our own ground
This era necessitates a new focus
To explore the edges of our motherland
There is more behind the scenes than we see
We will rise from the ashes of the fires that rage

About this poem

The poem is a cry for solidarity in a nation that's divided by politics or rather corrupted leaders of the disadvantaged. It shines light on the fact that the governing system is broken or flawed, it entails promises that are not being fulfilled. The system mostly equips the rich, the conditions of the poor are exercebated instead of being improved. Mostly focusing on the South African context.
