For a Long, Long Time

For a long, long time
I wanted so badly
for someone to save me
from myself.
For a long, long, time
I prayed so hard
that someone would
sweep me off my feet,
steal me from my own mind.
For a long, long time
I believed
that I needed to be saved,
that I was not
Loveable
because of things I cannot change.
For a long, long time
I hated the parts of me
that were most integral to my being.
I hated the parts
That have taught me the most
about love.

About this poem

This is a short poem dedicated to all those who thought themselves unlovable. It is a poem I wrote to help me realize that all the things I think are unlovable or unattractive about myself are the same things that taught me what love really is and the love I really deserve.

I am a young adult who quite dislikes being an adult. I try to live my life in a way that eight year old me would approve of, which often entails writing silly songs, dancing in the rain, collecting stuffed animals, and reading fantasy novels until dawn. Writing allows me to relax, to express my feelings, and best of all, to heal. more…

I love the unfiltered honesty of this poem ... and yet, it was a very hard poem for me to read, as it depicts an individual in a spiraling chaos of self-doubt and self-depreciation.

I've actually been there, where my own 'head-bullies' tell me that I am worthless and unlovable, and that I need validation outside of myself to achieve any kind of happiness. The struggle is very real for so many people, and I sincerely empathize with it.

The very first time I read this poem, when I finished its concluding lines, I remembered a quote from Emerson that I have held dear for so many years: "ne te quaesiveris extra."
