Responsibility

Basudev Karmakar 1974 (West Bengal , India)

Responsibility
O dear, so at stake, O sweet bird,
Free thy stern beak, thy little nestlings
Are in perilous cradle!
How I shall anymore outstretch my cooling skirt
Over them!
See, my that little generous breeder, immature,
Has become a cruel hacker!
See, how destruction he does pride
With mere an axe in hand!
And I shall in no time be perished,
Made to logs.
That my serves in my greenness seem
Greater to him in my death.
Free thy but tender beak of food,
Take them to another tree, my sister, save their lives
That the Nature prides
And let me die of no stain.

About this poem

A man plants a tree. It grows large and gives fruits. A bird makes a nest for its nestlings. The man wants to cut the tree to sell as he forgets its green utility. The tree asks the bird to come quick and save its nestling as the man is with an axe.
