Your Scars

Clinton Herring 1951 (Lawton, Oklahoma)

Long ago in joy You spoke,
creation in all its glory woke.
Each word You spoke, "Let there be...",
then life began for all to see.

What power, what wonder, what purpose,
where waves would crash upon the surface!
A hundred billion heavenly stars!
How can it be we caused Your scars??!

Light & darkness, water & land,
all came to be by Your mighty hand!
The sky with clouds that swirl around.
New life on earth is everywhere found.

Trees & grasses, ferns & flowers,
and all the mountains as majestic towers!
Fish & whales, birds, horses and more,
all now here from Your heavenly store!

Then man, male and female, oh so grand,
we came to life by Your meticulous hand!
A hundred billion heavenly stars!
How can it be we caused Your scars??!

A crown of thorns upon your brow
Your blood would flow upon us now.
With spear in side and nails in hand,
death is where You took a stand.

Your love would flow on us that day.
The wrath of God from us would stay.
A hundred billion heavenly stars!
How can it be we caused Your scars??!

Isaiah 52:14b ...So His appearance was marred more than any man and His form more than the sons of men.
