Ambush
Does man live in the jungle
And has greed turned men into beasts
Or that man is the jungle
And man’s greed is a beast?
Where are the sages from who knowledge flow
I am eager to know.
Greetings, my honourably corrupt leaders
Who, in size, an agama lizard
But a Komodo dragon in appetite
Loyal to the government of your stomach
When shall thy guts be sated?
‘Narrow is the way!’
huffing, you keep on puffing
‘Large is our grace,
Bow low to your fate!’
Ah! Shall we continue to rig
That sins may compound?
Shall we continue to sin
That grace may abound?
God forbid!
Now they poise
Like the black mamba, in ambush
Stretching their necks to steal a look
From behind the lies they hide
Waiting to make a sudden swoop
Like the Tarantula spider
Like a leap of leopards
Hunting a strayed deer
They hunt even my slip of the tongues
Like a committee of vultures
waiting for the demise of a wounded prey
They await to feed fat on my mishaps
They poise like a bask of crocodiles
Waiting at the water edge
Hoping I’ll come to drink water
But my fate lieth not in their jaws
I burn my bridges behind
No regrets
I nail my colours to the mast
I fight on!
About this poem
“Ambush” portrays the almost-impossible an effort it takes to switch lanes between good and evil in this world, repleted with moral decadence. It demands a firm resolution and a great deal of struggle.
