Analysis of When You Left
Robert Rowe 1967 (Agana, Guam)
Last night I saw you again in my dream.
Came morning I woke then did I realize
Radiant and beautiful did you seem.
Oh how I wished to gaze into your eyes.
At once I remembered that you were gone
When you left me my heart just broke; did you hear?
I’m sleeping alone now; it seems so wrong
How I wish I could stop crying these tears.
I hate you for leaving me this way
Without you by my side I feel so blue
And yet my love for you won’t go away
Oh how I wish I could let go of you.
Your fragrant hair, your gentle, tender touch
Will live forever in my memory.
Am I selfish; am I asking too much?
How I wish your love would envelope me.
You’ve been gone now for a month and a week;
Lying alone nights I can only cry.
But sometimes your name I still dare to speak
Oh how I wish you didn’t have to die.

About this poem
Admittedly not one of my best works. But, hey, maybe someday someone will turn it into a country song! It could happen!
