About this poem
This reggae poem, “Be a Ras-Tafari-Mon,” celebrates the soul’s universal thirst and quench for freedom, and is written with repetitive stanzas, in a format that can be set to music. Reggae has its genesis in music like the Jamaican hit folk song, “O Carolina,” written in a ska genre format in 1960, and composed by the Folkes Brothers, John, Mico, and Junior, my first cousins on my father’s side. This poem pays tribute to their legacy.
