Analysis of Drawing Blinds
John Jessup Kennan 1953 (Pomona)
I met this three-eyed lady once
Two of them are out of place
The third is where her cheek should be
She has an artist's face
I asked her what her name was
She never answered me
Her voice in ashes left amidst
The rubble of her memories
She never paints self-portraits
She don't wanna reflect
The images are difficult
A house of mirrors in a wreck
She never leaves the lights on
When she stares into you
That third eye in the darkness
As blind as are the other two
Visions may overtake themselves
Darkness betrays itself at night
Shall we draw blinds with lights on
These visions in the dark tonight?
I suppose the effort futile
In the darkness where we lie
Where light exposes mirrors
We can't see eye to eye
Three-legged midgets tap-dance
Morse Code to hearing-impaired
Interpreters in braille sign
So the blind won't see what isn't there
Silences illumine mirrors
Leave no shadows on our walls
A kitten with the lights out softly
Silent down a darkened hall
I'm peeking through your keyhole
Looking for anything but night
Just a three-eyed blind cartoonist
Alone with visions in the light
Visions may overtake themselves
Darkness betrays itself at night
Shall we draw blinds with lights on
These visions in the dark tonight?
