Lou Andreas-Salomé fue una de las filósofas e intelectuales más importantes del SXIX y principios del XX. Su vida dedicada a la labor intelectual y poética estuvo marcada por su potente relación con algunas de las grandes mentes del siglo como Friedrich Nietzsche, Rainer Maria Rilke o Sigmund Freud. Louise nació en San Petersburgo, era hija de un general del ejército imperial ruso que murió siendo ella niña. A los diecisiete años convenció al predicador alemán Hendrik Gillot, veinticinco años mayor que ella, para que le enseñara teología, filosofía, religión y literatura francesa y alemana. En 1880 se inscribió en la Universidad de Zúrich, en esa época el único país de habla germana donde las mujeres tenían permiso para cursar una carrera universitaria, donde cursó filosofía, historia del arte y religión comparada.
