The Reverend Dr. Clarence Talley, Sr. is a native of Alexandria, Louisiana. He united with Mount Corinth Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. J. Roland Hicks. He was licensed by Rev. Hicks and later ordained by the late Rev. L. H. Crosby. Dr. Talley has been instrumental in the spiritual growth and development of Mount Corinth, the community, and Prairie View A&M University for almost five decades. Dr. Talley is also Professor and has served 28 years as Director of Art at Prairie View A&M University where his spirit-filled teaching and dynamic artwork is widely known. He holds four earned degrees: B.A. from Southern University, M.F.A. from Louisiana State University, M.A. from Houston Graduate School of Theology, a Doctor of Biblical Studies in Theology from the Master’s International School of Divinity, and further studies at Rice University. Dr. Talley is a Fulbright-Hays Scholar to Africa where he has traveled extensively in East and West Africa. He is a Caribbean-American Exchange Fellow whose achievements include the study of the arts of the West Indies. Dr. Talley is the author of several books which genres include both art and theology. His recent book, Seven Things God Hates: A Biblical Perspective on Righteous Hate is now available. Previous works include: From the Pulpit to the Streets, Jesus Christ Made Straight A’s, Is It True: Reflections from the Word of God, Lie after Lie after Lie and God in the Land of Ghana. Dr. Talley’s works have been exhibited both nationally and internationally in numerous one-person and group exhibitions. These exhibits include: The Corcoran Gallery, Washington D.C.; Black Creativity, Chicago, Illinois; Huntsville Museum of Art, Museum of Art, Port Au Prince; University of West Indies in Trinidad; The Apex Museum, Atlanta, GA, University of Texas, Hampton Museum, Hampton, VA, Texas A & M and Prairie View A & M. Dr. Talley is a recipient of several awards, including the Johnson-Phillip All Faith Chapel Campus Ministry Award, Roanne H. Victor Merit Award, and TAMUS Teaching Excellence Award. He continues to exhibit in solo and group exhibitions, sharing his work with a global audience. In 2020. Dr. Talley’s 15 Stations of the Cross were in the Canadian production: Justice, Jazz & the Jesus Story. In 2022 & 2023, his work toured India and was shown in China. He is listed in Who’s Who in Black Houston. “250 Years of Afro American Art,” “Who’s Who in the South and Southwest,” “Who’s Who Among African Americans,” Who’s Who in Fine Arts Higher Education, “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers,” “Directory of People of Color in the Visual Arts,” and “American Artist of the Renown.” Moved by the desire to alleviate the financial burden of art students as he himself once was, Dr. Talley established the $50,000 Dr. Clarence Talley, Sr. Endowed Fund. He attended Southern on a track scholarship and remembers his needs as a student. He is committed to paying-it-forward. Dr. Talley and his wife, Carolyn, reside in Precious Prairie View, Texas and are the proud parents of Clarence Jr. and Crystal Ann. Two of the world’s most remarkable children.
