The Wager on War
Rahimeen Lodhi 2005 (Toronto)
The whistling shells became a song of terror,
A violent outburst of the Devil’s laughter,
The roaring jets soar in the thick grey clouds,
The rapid gunfire as our alarm clock,
Corpses and blood became a part of the scenery.
And the horrific thought that constantly crosses our minds: Are we next?
Fear runs through our trembling veins,
Our hearts became home to all this pain
As each day worsens, I hope my death isn’t in vain.
Man after man, we start to perish in the very land we called home.
Man against machine, it’s a gamble with our lives, and there is no retreat.
The empty promises of peace and solidarity float in the gunpowder-filled air,
Leaving us trapped in our own skin,
Our homes demolished.
Our families severed.
Our freedom devastated,
Our lives have gone up as a cloud of smoke.
The agony that lingers within us while witnessing our homeland transform into anothers’ war playground.
And we sit helpless in the ruins.
The soil moistened with the blood, sweat and tears of our people,
Bearing the fruits of vengeance and sacrifice.
But that isn’t the only battle we’re left to fight.
Lies being shot from the mouths of the hypocrites,
Along with grenades of fake pity,
And manipulation disguised as aid.
The deadly disease of propaganda had sent many on a suicide mission.
The stench of corruption and greed is as malodorous as a rotting corpse,
And the deadly intentions grin behind that gas mask.
There is blood in their hands.
They are guilty,
But they call it courage.
It’s a sea of twisted lies, with biased media that as the crashing tide,
Devouring all that swims against it.
Yet the fact that they don’t care,
That they chose money and power over humanity,
That they were able to destroy all we had with no regrets,
Haunts our mind, driving us to the edge of the cliff of patience,
Leaving us but to wonder when it will all end.
