The Missouri Mules

Missouri mules are sturdy, Missouri mules are strong,
And by their grit and valor they win our grateful song;
   And if you choose the black mules or bay or gray or dun,
      The spirit is the same, Sir;
      They live up to their name, Sir;
      And merit all their fame, Sir,
   Before the day has run.

Missouri mules are happy, Missouri mules are glad,
And often very playful, but never really bad;
   They take the menu offered or browse among the hills;
      They greet the day with "He-haw!"
      And thank-you say with "He-haw!"
      And laugh away with "He-haw!"
   Most every kind of ills.

Missouri mules are wise mules, they love their home and friends,
And love to do the services that bring in dividends;
   But whether they are grazing or toiling for the pelf,
      You never have to school them;
      You needn't try to fool them;
      And if you wish to rule them,
   You first must rule yourself.

Missouri mules have vigor, Missouri mules have vim,
And equal the occasion if it be gay or grim;
   For any bay or black mule or any dun or gray
      Can race or bare or shod, Sir,
      Or plow your loam or sod, Sir,
      Or send you home to God, Sir,
   Or else the other way.
