Witness

I was witness to a crime,
On the way to work one day.
I said, "I don't have the time,"
So I looked the other way.
There was a baby in the street,
She was cold and wet and crying.
Important people I had to meet,
No time to care about her dying.
I was a witness to this tale,
But I never saw a news report.
My humanity did surely fail,
Selfishness was my consort.
I found a golden bowl at work,
Rubbed it with an old and dusty rag.
The old genie cried, "What a jerk,
Your only love is an empty bag.
So I asked him for a second chance,
And, indeed, I was there smitten.
The baby there did my life enhance,
Cold and wet and crying little kitten.
