Snakes (A bestiary poem)
I've long since stretched my feet in blades of grass,
Where the waters always flow,
Flooding the fields in an eternal sea,
And so it is through this kingdom the living lassos coil,
Slithering about my boat as I head to the market for more nets,
My daughter playfully sticks her foot in the water as it rushes by,
Knowing well of the serpentine lords that dwell with patient hunger,
They forget me, as they go about their endless hunt,
Fangs sink deep into the unfortunate passerby,
As the coiling length of the living lassos drag it down,
To its death, depth, and hungering stomachs below,
But then they casually caress the length of the unseen net,
That pulls them towards the sky, and there
Upon my boat they scurry about, knowing they've been caught,
They care little though, and are concerned of even less,
Their eggs sit silent and as patient as their parents at the bottom of the waters,
They know they will die, though somehow they have the natural foresight I cannot perceive,
The waters below them have eternal depth, with eternal coiling hunger,
Eternity has known their kind, through patience and determination,
And so eternity will always know, forever more, of coiling hunger in the depth.
