No Wind Today

There I was, standing on my back porch, a little nipper

around seven or eight years old. The stage was set.

I could feel it in my bones. This was going to be my day to fly.

Above me were the birds playing cheerfully, gathering together

as if to be my audience on my inaugural flight.

How did they know what I was about to do?

Even the bees were buzzing around to get a good seat

on their favourite flower. Now everything was still.

The quiet was deafening in my ears, but I knew what I should do.

I took a deep breath, ran and jumped, my arms flapping crazily,

and "POW." I fell flat on my face.

Knowing that all of God's creatures were watching,

I searched for a way to save me from the embarressment.

I got up off the ground, dusted off my clothes, placed

a finger on my tongue, and held it up in the air,and said,

"NO WIND TODAY."

A bird like me needs lots and lots of wind."
