In My Mind's Eye

Kathy A. Wittman 1949 (Tennessee)

I can see in my mind's eye
the old homeplace at Husky's Grove,
its unpretentious, weathered planks
sturdy amidst life's tumultuous storms.
I can hear the wind whistling
through those dense, primeval forests
during the harsh Appalachian winters
endured by my stalwart ancestors.
I can taste crystal Spring water,
ice-cold and delicious on my tongue,
easily accessible, free to mountaineers
who called Husky's Grove their home.
I can smell the sweet savor
of lush, ripened peaches, preserved
in unadorned, sparkling mason jars,
stored in dank cellars as treasures.
I can feel the triumphant joy
of my great-grandmother as she
snuggled her beloved first-born child,
my grandfather, against her full breast.
