I met a Rough Rider

Jack Richards

I was nine
He was ninety
His leathered face
Had grown into tiny wrinkles
His Hair was still grey
We stood outside uncle Albert's house
Albert attracted people
Then my dad's hurried tone
"Come on, I'll introduce you to a Rough Rider"
In my mind, I became older
Then, this long, thin hand
Gripped my hand powerfully
The strength of a hero
He stood against a blue sky
It is the nearest I have been
to an immortal
