Forced smile

When a forced smile is more common than a real one
When there’s pain deep in her eyes
And nobodys even surprised.
And something has broken inside

When she tells you that she is fine
And you know she’s telling a lie
But you don’t mind, as long as she’s safe
As long as she doesn’t lose face

And you know she’s never alright
She’s just tired; have a good sleep tonight
As you tell her, she nods and she smiles
She’s long gone, she’s been for a while

Her eyes are empty; alone
She just doesn’t want to go home
She can’t help it; she picks up the phone
In some weird kind of strange hope.

She dials, but nobody’s there
She sighs low, and nobody hears
She’s long gone now, there’s no going back
If only somebody had cared

When a forced smile, is more common than a real one
She’s lost it, her hope is all gone
She braces, waiting for it
To come take her

She’s lost now, and there’s no coming back
They’re all sorry, but none of them crack
Her forced smile, that is her own
Now she’s never alone

She’s found them, all of her friends
That phone call will never end
Now she’s no longer forced to smile
This real one has taken a while.

She’s moved on, her forced smile is gone
And she loves it, but it’s been too long
Since she’d faked it, she’d forgotten how
But why would she need to know now?

She doesn’t need to know how.
