Apostates
Richard Newton Sherrer 1951 (Easton)
People rely upon a dream,
Defile flesh, snub authority;
Glorious blaspheme it may seem,
Speaking evil of dignity.
They will contend with the devil,
Disputing the body of Moses;
Judged blasphemous stir up evil,
Showing that they are malicious.
These people do not understand,
Unreasoning as a brute beast;
Corruption that seems to expand,
Farther from the west to the east.
Woe to them who walk in the way,
Abandon themselves for the gain;
The lost sheep that have gone astray,
That will perish to feel the pain.
These are hidden reefs of your love,
Are feasting with you without fear;
Waterless clouds and winds thereof,
Swept along by winds that appear.
Fruitless trees withered in the fall,
Twice dead and plucked up by their roots;
Lumberjacks were given a call,
To chop down a tree that pollutes.
The raging waves that roam the sea,
Casting up the foam of their shame;
Wandering stars as fancy-free,
As the moon shines bright to proclaim.
