Shooting Stars

Marching, Shouting, Fighting
They always wanted something.
Over the hills, through the tunnels
Digging through their dirty, wooden funnels

The stars were pretty and bright
There were moving ones which were quite a site
Until my friends said, "Don't go higher!"
Then I realized we were under enemy fire

I killed, bled, and fought for my country
Not to escape jail, home, or to pardon a bounty
I went home and looked into the sky, to find peace
Only to see the infamous long, white streaks

I found cover and hit the deck
Only for my wife to say, "There is no threat"
I look back up at the dotted sky
I smiled at the shooting stars and thought, "I would not die"

About this poem

I play a lot of PvP games, most of them use tracer rounds so the bullets are easier to see, and avoid. So it made me wonder of a soldier would mistake a bullet for a shootings star, and vice versca.
