Soul Cellar

In the soul cellar
A dark room of roots
Twist turn and tightly
Knot the vegetables of yesterday-
A life's harvest gathered
For storage and stews.

About this poem

My parents kept root vegetables in a cold dark room in cellar. I would go retrieve vegetables when the occasional meal required it. It always fascinated me how this food stayed good over the winter and it instilled a feeling of safety and warmth that my family had provisions to last through the cold months. I had a great childhood and have great memories. I store these memories in my soul cellar and call upon them for my own provisions. These memories make up who I am. Just like the root vegetables I consumed with my family over a winter night meal.
