YELLOW STAR OF DAVID

Alhassan Ishak 1990 (Kurgwi, Plateau State.)

THE YELLOW STAR OF DAVID

Long transport coaches come in the night.

Spewing acrid dark strands of coaly smokes repugnant in the sight.

Halting with shrieking noises facing the ghetto hostels by the right.

Hordes of Jewish passengers guarded by the Jewish Police are driven in without a fight.

Beaten by the dreaded Gestapos and troop in with so much might.

Ill-fated Jews prisoners wear the yellow David Star by the arms tight

Despaired of seeing ever the similitude of Moses's guiding light.

When escaping against the Pharaoh's plot throughout the night.

Crossing the dreaded divided Nile River like a flash of a light.

Now, crammed in the wooden coaches like sardines in a can.

Coughing, indistinct yelling like sweltering on a frying pan.

Suffocating and dying one by one without some hushes of a fan.

So deadly, the horrible journey begins at the end.

Auschwitz, Treblinka, Dachau, Bergen-Belsen where they meet their end.

Delousing deadpan humour turns to painful dying bend.

In the gas chamber, Jewish answer was a deadly Zyklone.

Crématoriums are surreptitiously fed alone
With the naked innocent passengers' corpse.

Which in time turn to pallid heaps of crushed ashes.
