Out at sea
Out on the ocean surrounded by the stormy grey seas
The longing for family and home is all that bothers me
I can weather a storm, lightning, thunder, and all
We can not stop for a broken stern or falling tree
We sail through the storm only one man’s been lost
We have much to do today to have that be the only cost
Now mastless and limping I man one of the oars
As the men and I row and refuse to exhaust
Now with shore in sight, we begin to rejoice
We are home at last, the flag of victory we hoist
When an awful wave comes and capsizes our vessel
Save my brethren or go home, that is the choice
Which pain do I choose to burden?
About this poem
This poem was written for my school's Kalliope. The theme for this issue was voyage, aligning with our year's theme of the Oddesy and Illiad. It is a poem about a shiphand traveling on the sea and longing for home and the trials he goes through to get there. In the end, he has to decide whether to save his comrades or to finally get his dream of returning home.
