Ordinary Extraordinary People

Thirty something single women
Entering the pub for some hard won fun,
Prosecco - a rare delight
Watched as they settle in for the night.

Judged for their dress, their laughs, their wiles,
Nobody knows what’s behind those smiles.
Solid golden olden friends,
They are not the image they extend.

One has recently left her man,
The time on this relationship over-ran.
Just weeks before her marriage
She bravely released her bondage,
And left the coercive controlling prick
Who was her truly greatest critic.

One has lost a much-loved son,
Such a tiny little one.
He was a blessing full of pain,
A child too different to remain.

One rarely ventures out at night,
Her tiny daughter has to fight
To live and breathe.
A soul so rare she needs such special care
A responsibility impossible to easily share.

So do not judge what you have not known,
The path that we journey is always alone,
See the lines on their faces
The weight in their eyes -
And know that this one night
Is a rare night
Of fun.

About this poem

The result of seeing 3 young women out for a night of fun - and knowing the daily burdens they carried. The people around them saw them as completely different from what they were.
