Dan Davies 1972 (Caerleon)

It’s enough for me
Although some would not agree
There are no heaven-bothering peaks
No volcanoes, no ice floes, our few waterfalls are modest and pretty.
But our roots go way down deep
And there was a time when we scratched into them to feed the furnaces of the world
Those scratches drew blood
And that burned bright but brief
In a final flash of fury guttered out
Back to peace if not prosperity
But it’s still a good place to be
And it’s still good enough for me
Here amongst the empty mines and haunted mills
Between these green, green hills
