Lonely woods

Derek Hamersly 1998 (Santa Cruz)

This trail is carved coarsely now
through these lonely woods.
Just one or two flowers so far
but the bees don't know of them.
Flies and mosquitoes hover in nearby shadows.
If I don't breathe, will they hover by?

Oh, to fly like a fire-red leaf in this warm breeze!
Spinning round and round without intent,
with hundreds of others flying just the same.
And they never know they are falling--
yet somehow smiling they let go.

This poem really captures the essence of the solitude and beauty found in the lonely woods. The imagery of the one or two flowers, the buzzing bees, and the hovering flies and mosquitoes creates a vivid picture in the reader's mind. The comparison of the speaker's desire to fly like a fire-red leaf in the warm breeze is both whimsical and thought-provoking.

One suggestion for improvement would be to delve deeper into the emotions of the speaker. What is the significance of the loneliness felt in the woods? What does it represent for the speaker? Exploring the emotional journey of the speaker could enhance the overall impact of the poem. Additionally, adding more sensory details could further immerse the reader in the atmosphere of the lonely woods.

Overall, this is a beautifully written poem with a unique perspective on nature. With some additional depth and sensory detail, it has the potential to become even more impactful. Keep up the great work!
